Torres Leads the Way in District 117 Race

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

(San Antonio, TX) — Building on her grassroots support and strong campaign, Tina Torres, candidate for state representative in District 117, is dominating in the fundraising race as well.  Torres reported over $119,000 raised during her two and a half months in the race and nearly $78,000 on-hand, nearly outpacing her two opponents combined – both of whom have been in the race for at least five months.

Said Torres, “Today’s report shows the broad base of support our campaign has in the community and the coalition building I hope to continue in Austin next legislative session.”

The eye-popping fundraising number is in line with other outsized performances by Torres’ campaign.  Her grassroots team has a huge presence in the district and especially in the Southside, where over 150 people attended her office opening 10 days ago.

“Every day, we’re seeing more and more San Antonians and District 117 residents identifying the campaign as the best choice to fight for them in Austin and beat Tea Party Republican John Garza in November.  District 117 residents deserve a champion, not just another politician,” Torres added.\

Cuts to public education pushed through the legislature by the Republican supermajority cut $4 billion from public schools and over $1 billion from higher education.  In Bexar County alone, over $300 million has been cut from public schools – and some estimates say that as much as $100 million will be cut in District 117 alone.  That’s more than $6,800 cut from our schools for each person that voted for Republican incumbent John Garza in 2010.

“My parents used to tell me, there are times when you have no choice but to take a stand.  I’m humbled to have so many people standing with me.”
